Manker Patten Tennis Club was incorporated in 1979. It has had a long association with Chattanooga tennis and the University of Chattanooga that began well before that time, dating to as early as the 1930’s. Three names have been synonymous with tennis in Chattanooga and are deeply rooted in the heritage of Manker Patten Tennis Club……..Manker Patten, Alex Guerry and Zan Guerry.

David Manker Patten, considered by some as “Mr. Tennis” in Chattanooga in the early twentieth century, was a star tennis player in college and afterward, and was a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Tennessee.

Alex Guerry was considered the driving force behind the development of tennis in Chattanooga and Tennessee’s first entrant in the Southern Tennis Hall of Fame. Among his many tennis championships were two national father and son titles and 33 City men’s singles and doubles titles. Alex led efforts to build numerous tennis facilities, including Manker Patten Tennis Center. The latest addition to our club, the Zan Guerry Clubhouse, is a state-of-the-art facility completed in 2007 and dedicated to Alex’s son, Zan Guerry.

Zan has had a long and stellar tennis career. He has won 20 USTA National junior and senior championships, was a four time NCAA All American at Rice University and is a member of the Southern Tennis Hall of Fame. Recently, Zan and his son, Jeff, won the National Father-Son tournament in Sarasota, Florida.

Beyond Chattanooga, the club has a rich and powerful heritage in southern and national tennis history. For example, of the 58 members of the Southern Tennis Hall of Fame, six are members or professionals at our Club. Several of our teaching professionals have played on the ATP tour, and several are recent national and/or world champions. Manker Patten Tennis Club has hosted many national level tournaments. Such notables as Jimmy Connors, Brian Gottfried, Bob Lutz and Dick Stockton have played at Manker Patten.

With our facilities and rich tennis tradition of National and Southern champions, Hall of Fame members and hosting major tennis tournaments, Manker Patten Tennis Club is viewed as one of the most prominent clubs in the South.
