25. Chattanooga, Tenn.
A city stages a comeback fueled by artists and retailers.
In 1969, Walter Cronkite famously called Chattanooga the “dirtiest” city in America. In recent years, though, it has undergone a dramatic overhaul with a radical gentrification plan and an aggressive citywide push to lure artists. In addition to a $120 million clean-up-and-invest 21st Century Waterfront Plan, an incentive program called Arts Move brings artists of all mediums into town; a yearly Southern arts fair called Four Bridges draws thousands each April; and several arts districts have been cultivated and nurtured.
On the heels of this artistic transformation has come the inevitable, yet not unwelcome, boutique boom in places like the recently restored Warehouse Row, a Civil War-era factory turned shopping center filled with local, upscale and artisanal goods. SARAH WILDMAN

Chattanooga is ranked 25th on the New York Times’recently-released list of places to visit in 2012.
Chattanooga is one of four American cities, falling behind Oakland and San Franscisco, Calif. and beating out Tahoe, Calif.
The Scenic City fell alongside some major names on the intergalactic list, which included No. 4 London and No. 20 Space.
“The word is certainly getting out about Chattanooga,” said Dave Santucci, vice president of marketing for the Chattanooga Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We’ll just keep the ball rolling.”
"The Today Show" featured five easy, affordable road trips Wednesday, and Chattanooga made the list.
The list included locations that are easily accessible from a large city—such as Atlanta—and that are affordable, according to the segment.
The Hunter Museum and The Chattanoogan got mentions.
"What's great about Chattanooga is the combination of that amazing antebellum Southern charm, but with a very progressive city — with great culture scene, great art scene and actually very eco-focused," Travel and Leisure's Feature Director Nilou Motamed said on the show.
The segment was another recent instance of recent national and regional publicity, from outlets such as Outside Magazine and Southern Living.
